ABB has finalised its acquisition of Specialtrasfo S.p.A., an Italian manufacturer of specialized medium-voltage transformers. This move, completed on July 1, 2026, strengthens ABB’s position in industrial power conversion, integrating Specialtrasfo’s capabilities directly into its Motion High Power division.

The transaction brings Francesco Pagano, who has led Specialtrasfo as CEO since 2000, and his technical team into the ABB fold to address surging global demand for specialised transformers. Financial terms of the acquisition, which was first announced on May 12, 2026, were not disclosed.

Strengthening industrial powertrains through integrated transformer solutions

Specialtrasfo has established an installed base spanning over 70 countries, having manufactured more than 2,100 units with a total installed capacity exceeding 22,000 MVA since the turn of the millennium. This extensive track record demonstrates the firm’s significant contribution to industrial electrification.

By absorbing this proven capacity, ABB strengthens its supply chain resilience for converter and rectifier transformers. These components are critical for energy-intensive industrial processing, the expansion of data centres, and the rapidly growing artificial intelligence infrastructure.

The acquisition represents the formalisation of a decades-long commercial partnership. For years, ABB relied on Specialtrasfo as a trusted supplier to complement its motors and drives offerings. By bringing this manufacturing in-house, ABB can now provide a unified powertrain solution, integrating components from a single source.

This integrated approach is essential as manufacturers pivot to Manufacturing Execution System strategies to drive plant agility. Simplified control architecture, stemming from integrated hardware, becomes a significant advantage in managing large-scale electrical systems. This integration fosters greater efficiency and reliability in complex industrial setups.

The technical synergy between the two firms focuses on medium-voltage applications, specifically within the 1 kV to 52 kV range. Specialtrasfo has specialised in custom-designed converter and rectifier transformers. These units are engineered differently from standard distribution assets, built to handle the non-linear loads, high harmonic currents, and commutation stresses common in heavy industrial rectifiers.

This specialized equipment is vital for processes such as electrolysis in metals production, for electric arc furnaces used in steel manufacturing, and within High-Voltage DC (HVDC) transmission systems. Its applications extend across various sectors including energy, marine, metals, mining, industrial processing, and offshore projects.

Expanding production capacity in Northern Italy

Specialtrasfo’s three production facilities, all located in Northern Italy, will now operate under ABB’s Motion High Power division. These sites boast a yearly production capacity exceeding 2,000 MVA. The integration of these facilities aligns with ABB’s broader manufacturing and expansion strategy in Europe, which includes a recently announced €200 million manufacturing investment program across the region.

This expansion aims to serve customer requirements across diverse sectors. These include the energy, marine, metals, mining, industrial processing, and offshore applications, where environmental conditions demand rigorous engineering standards for power conversion components. The added capacity enhances ABB’s ability to meet escalating demand.

Juha Koskela, President of ABB’s Motion High Power division, stated that the long-standing relationship between ABB and Specialtrasfo underscores the trust ABB has in the technical expertise, proven quality, and reliability of the transformers Specialtrasfo produces. This acquisition is a strategic move to secure critical components in a market facing significant supply chain pressure and increased lead times for transformers.

As global electricity demand increases, projected to grow significantly to USD 158.47 billion by 2034 for the overall transformer market, the availability of high-demand transformers has become a bottleneck for industrial electrification projects across five continents. Specialtrasfo’s contributions will directly address this challenge.

Addressing the energy transition and industrial electrification

The decision to acquire Specialtrasfo follows a clear rise in global electricity demand, a trend highlighted in the International Energy Agency (IEA) World Energy Outlook 2025. This demand is driven by the rapid electrification of heavy industries, the expansion of data centres, and the growth in artificial intelligence infrastructure. Transformers are a critical component in this conversion process.

Joerg Stutz, Business Line Manager for High Power Solutions at ABB, noted that the global energy transition requires proven, scalable, and reliable industrial solutions. He emphasised that by combining Specialtrasfo’s expertise in specialised transformers with ABB’s leadership in electric drives and motors, customers will be supported through the entire lifecycle, acting as a single, accountable partner for key components and solutions in critical applications.

ABB’s acquisition strategy typically involves 5-10 small-to-mid-sized acquisitions annually. These are designed to fill portfolio gaps and enter high-growth niches, focusing on quick integration and margin accretion. The company aims for these acquisitions to supplement sales growth by an additional 1% to 2%, making them an integral part of the “ABB Way” performance culture.

In the first quarter of 2026, ABB reported strong financial results, with orders up 32% year-on-year to $11,298 million and revenues of $8,734 million, an 18% increase. Operational EBITA reached $2,049 million, reflecting a margin of 23.5%. Maintaining this growth trajectory requires a stable supply of core components like medium-voltage transformers, particularly as the cobot market and automated sectors continue to demand reliable power for industrial robotics and processing lines.

Specialtrasfo’s legacy and its global impact

Specialtrasfo S.p.A. has a deep-rooted history, tracing its origins back to 1946 when the Pivi brothers founded a transformer company in Milan. The firm was later renamed Specialtrasfo in 1985. Since 2000, under CEO Francesco Pagano, the company has played an instrumental role in advancing specialised transformer technology.

Their installed base of over 2,100 transformers, with a total capacity exceeding 22,000 MVA, spans across five continents and serves customers in more than 70 countries. This global footprint, built over years, showcases their technical reach and the broad applicability of their products. This reach is a considerable asset for ABB, enhancing its overall market penetration and service capabilities for specific industrial applications.

The company\’s specialized products are integral to various heavy industries. They are used in electrolysis and electrowinning for metals like aluminium and copper, in electric arc furnaces for steel manufacturing, and in DC traction systems for rail transport. Their transformers also power large-scale DC motors, battery chargers, and uninterruptible power supplies, demonstrating their crucial role in foundational industrial infrastructure.

Portfolio integration and future industrial applications

Specialtrasfo will continue to serve its existing customers as a transformer supplier while supporting ABB’s integrated offering for motor and non-motor applications. This combined offering includes medium-voltage transformers, along with medium- and low-voltage variable speed drives, high- and low-speed synchronous motors and generators, switchgear, and custom e-houses. The ability to provide these as a packaged solution is particularly relevant for complex industrial projects and severe operating environments.

This integration is crucial for sectors such as offshore wind farms, floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) units, and power-from-shore (PFS) installations. These applications require high reliability and tightly integrated power solutions to ensure operational continuity and efficiency. The combined expertise will facilitate more comprehensive project delivery for ABB’s customers.

For the 130 employees based at Specialtrasfo’s Agrate Brianza headquarters and its surrounding sites, the acquisition provides the backing of a multinational firm with reported revenue of US$33.2 billion in 2026. The retention and integration of this experienced workforce are vital, as this team has managed a substantial total installed capacity globally and possesses niche technical knowledge.

As modern electric grids require more sophisticated power conversion solutions to integrate renewable energy sources, Specialtrasfo’s ability to manufacture transformers capable of handling commutation stresses and extra heating will remain a key technical asset for ABB’s global operations. Such specialised capabilities are essential for maintaining grid stability and power quality in an increasingly electrified world. This move enhances ABB’s ability to deliver end-to-end solutions for the evolving industrial landscape.
