    Aitech has introduced its C165 Rugged 6U VME Single Board Computer (SBC), offering defense and aerospace organisations a pathway to modernise mission-critical systems.

    This development comes as military programmes face increasing pressure to enhance performance, fortify cybersecurity, and address component obsolescence. The C165 provides an upgrade path that avoids the substantial cost, schedule disruption, and technical risks typically associated with a complete platform redesign, extending the operational life of vital defense assets.

    Upgrading Legacy Military Hardware with VME

    VME (VERSAbus Module Eurocard) bus technology has been a cornerstone in defense systems for decades, originating in the early 1980s. Formalised under IEEE 1014 in 1987, VMEbus maintains widespread use globally, despite the emergence of newer, higher-bandwidth standards.

    Its enduring appeal in military applications stems from its robust Eurocard design, inherent reliability, and strong backward compatibility. This allows the integration of modern components with minimal disruption to existing hardware and software, a key factor for platforms with decades-long operational timelines.

    However, this longevity also presents significant challenges, primarily technology obsolescence and the dwindling supply of older VME components. Defense organisations continually grapple with integrating advanced capabilities into systems designed in an earlier technological era.

    Aitech, established in 1983, has a long history of providing rugged VME boards, including the earlier C164 and C163 models. The company remains a market leader in Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) and Modified-Off-The-Shelf (MOTS) products for critical defense and aerospace applications.

    VME’s Enduring Role in Mission-Critical Systems

    VME systems are foundational in a diverse range of defense applications. These include naval combat management, advanced radar processing, and electronic warfare.

    The technology also underpins critical avionics, C4ISR (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance), and missile guidance systems. Its proven reliability and ruggedness make it indispensable where mission failure is not an option.

    Technical Prowess of the Aitech C165 VME Board

    At the core of the Aitech C165 Rugged 6U VME SBC lies the SWaP-optimised 11th Gen Intel Core i7-1185GRE Tiger Lake UP3 processor. This processor is specifically designed for embedded applications and includes integrated Intel Iris Xe graphics with 96 execution units.

    This powerful combination delivers a significant performance uplift over previous-generation VME solutions. The C165 provides double the CPU performance per watt and more than 2.5 times the graphics performance compared to earlier Aitech VME platforms.

    Such advancements enable system integrators to tackle increasingly demanding workloads. These include complex mission computing, sophisticated ISR processing, and high-resolution video analytics, all while preserving compatibility with existing VME deployments.

    Performance and SWaP Optimisation for Demanding Workloads

    The C165 supports up to 32GB of LPDDR4X-4267 memory with in-band ECC (Error-Correcting Code). This feature is vital for optimising memory-intensive workloads and ensuring data integrity in critical applications, where precision and reliability are paramount.

    For secure data management, the board integrates up to 4TB of self-encrypted NVMe SSD. This high-capacity storage solution comes equipped with Quick Erase and Secure Erase functionalities, crucial for handling sensitive defense data. Its rugged 6U VME form factor allows for a significant amount of circuitry and I/O capabilities within a standard Eurocard size.

    The Intel Core i7-1185GRE features four cores and eight threads, with a base frequency of 1.80 GHz and a max turbo frequency of 4.40 GHz. This level of processing power, combined with its configurable Thermal Design Power (TDP) from 12W to 28W, makes it ideal for power-optimised embedded systems in challenging environments.

    Fortifying Mission-Critical Data with AiSecure

    Modern defense operations demand not only high performance but also uncompromised data security. The C165 addresses this critical need with Aitech’s proprietary AiSecure cybersecurity framework.

    This integrated suite of security features protects mission-critical data and ensures system integrity against evolving threats. Protecting sensitive information is paramount in today’s interconnected military landscape.

    Key components of the AiSecure framework include Trusted Platform Module (TPM 2.0), which provides hardware-based security for cryptographic keys and sensitive data. Secure Boot ensures that only verified software loads during system startup, guarding against malicious injections.

    Intel Boot Guard further validates the system’s initial boot block code, preventing unauthorised modifications and bolstering protection. These robust measures are complemented by encrypted storage and secure erase capabilities for the NVMe SSD, providing a multi-layered defense strategy crucial for safeguarding military intelligence.

    This comprehensive approach to security is especially relevant given the increasing sophistication of cyber threats targeting defense infrastructure. It enables military operators to maintain data confidentiality and system resilience in hostile digital environments.

    Strategic Upgrade Path and Long-Term Support

    The C165 is designed as a pin-compatible successor to Aitech’s earlier C164 and C163 SBCs. This offers an efficient upgrade path for customers, helping them manage technology obsolescence while preserving significant past investments in qualified hardware, software, and platform infrastructure.

    Alex Trigoub, Product Manager at Aitech, underscored this commitment: “Defense customers need practical modernization solutions that improve mission capability while minimizing program risk.” He noted the C165 delivers modern processing, integrated GPU, advanced cybersecurity, versatile I/O, and high-capacity secure storage in a rugged 6U VME form factor.

    This allows customers to enhance performance and extend the operational life of deployed systems without re-architecting their platforms. Ultimately, this approach minimises upgrade and operational costs, a critical consideration for defense budgets. Investment in manufacturing technologies like this board ensures long-term operational capabilities.

    Aitech has a proven track record, having pioneered conduction-cooled military VMEbus products. They also developed the first true radiation-tolerant, 3U CompactPCI COTS embedded computing products for Earth-orbit satellites and manned space vehicles. This commitment to innovation ensures that the C165 is built upon decades of expertise.

    Aitech’s Legacy in Rugged Embedded Computing

    Aitech has consistently focused on delivering robust solutions for extreme environments. Their prior innovations include the C160, introduced in 2009, and the C114 from 2017, which brought QorIQ T1042 or T2081 multi-core processors to embedded systems.

    In 2022, Aitech’s AI supercomputers were used during NASA’s LOFTID mission for space applications, further demonstrating their capability in demanding fields. More recently, on 9 September 2026, Aitech announced new 3U VPX C530 and SOSA-aligned 3U VPX U-C5300 GPGPU boards. These are next-generation rugged AI GPU accelerators designed for high-performance AI at the edge for defense platforms, showcasing their ongoing innovation.

    The introduction of the C165 Rugged 6U VME board reinforces Aitech’s position as a key enabler for defense and aerospace modernisation. It allows critical systems to evolve with contemporary processing power and security, securing existing investments while preparing for future mission demands. Advanced production capabilities are essential for the defense sector.
