U.S. based solar developer plans a $750 million expansion in Africa

Renewvia Energy Corp., an American renewable energy corporation, plans to invest $750 million in Africa to improve electricity availability in rural communities.

As seen on Bloomberg, the company intends to expand operations in Uganda, Rwanda, Ethiopia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo as part of a larger attempt to provide off-grid solar power to millions of people who live outside the reach of traditional electrical networks.

According to Renewvia Africa CEO Trey Jarrard, the company expects to add over 2.1 million new electrical connections through the expansion.

The program expands the company’s existing footprint in Kenya and Nigeria, where it has already installed solar-powered mini-grids in isolated villages.

Mini-grids generate and distribute electricity on a local scale using solar panels and battery storage technology.

These systems can power houses, schools, hospitals, water pumps, and small enterprises without requiring a national grid link.

Mini-grids are becoming increasingly popular as an energy alternative in rural African areas where expanding centralized power infrastructure is frequently prohibitively expensive.

Renewvia claims that the impact of these projects has already been enormous. Surveys of homes and small enterprises connected to its systems in Kenya and Nigeria revealed significant gains in income and living circumstances.

After electric water pumps were introduced, several communities saw a reduction in the strain of going long distances for water collection.

The firm also stated that dependable electricity provided women with new employment options.

The company’s business strategy is largely focused on countries that already generate hydropower but struggle to electrify rural areas.
