The initiative arrives as Caterpillar reports record financial performance, with its power-generation division seeing a significant boost from surging demand for AI infrastructure.

Caterpillar’s journey into autonomous operations began nearly four decades ago. Engineers first experimented with Global Positioning Systems (GPS) in the mid-1980s, laying the groundwork for what would become one of the industry’s most advanced autonomous fleets.
Early prototypes, including autonomous mining trucks tested in a Texas limestone quarry from 1994 to 1995, demonstrated early successes in improved safety and operational consistency. The first commercial autonomous hauling solution launched in 2013. Since then, autonomous machines have safely moved over 11 billion tonnes of material and travelled more than 380 million kilometres, all while maintaining a flawless safety record with zero lost-time injuries.

A prime example is the Cat AI Assistant, which debuted at CES 2026. This voice-activated tool allows field technicians, customers, and operators to pull up repair procedures, troubleshoot issues, and identify necessary parts instantly.
The Cat AI Assistant draws upon Caterpillar’s vast proprietary data, leveraging information from its approximately 1.6 million connected assets globally. This enormous data repository, comprising more than 16 petabytes of structured data, offers a competitive advantage, providing detailed insights that underpin the AI’s functionality.
Beyond field support, AI now powers site scanning software, enabling detailed analysis of job sites, and the creation of digital twins in manufacturing for operational analysis. Caterpillar is also applying AI internally to modernise legacy code, generate and test new software, and identify defects earlier in the development cycle, according to Mineart.

To address this, Caterpillar plans to invest $100 million over the next five years, training its 118,000 employees in AI, autonomy, and robotics.

A significant driver was its power-generation division, which saw sales jump 72% to $3.1 billion, largely due to demand for power equipment used in data centres supporting cloud computing and generative AI.
CEO Joe Creed confirmed this trend, stating that demand for cloud computing and generative AI infrastructure shows no signs of slowing down.
