General Motors’ Lansing Delta Township Assembly plant in Michigan will be retooled for future hybrid-electric vehicle production.

The decision follows a reassessment of electric-vehicle production capacity amid changing consumer demand and U.S. policy. Competitors with extensive hybrid line-ups have gained ground, while the national average petrol price reached $4.2471 per gallon on 28 October 2026, up 39.5% year-on-year. Dealers have also urged GM to expand its hybrid offerings.

Market forces drive GM’s shift towards hybrid production

For years, GM’s public strategy centred on an all-electric line-up, but changing market conditions have prompted a reassessment. CEO Mary Barra told analysts the previous week that GM would offer hybrid vehicles across multiple segments, foreshadowing the subsequent announcement.

Rising fuel prices have influenced consumer preferences. The national average price for regular petrol jumped to $4.2471 per gallon on 28 October 2026. This represents a significant 39.5% increase from $3.0437 on the same date in 2025. Some consumers are seeking more fuel-efficient vehicles without switching fully to electric vehicles.

GM’s U.S. market share fell to 16.6% in the first nine months of 2026, from 17.4% during the same period a year earlier. Meanwhile, some competitors with extensive hybrid line-ups have reported sales growth. John Murphy, founder of automotive advisory firm The MAP, described the move as “historically unusual” but a “good step in the right direction”.

The shift reflects the role hybrids can play between conventional internal-combustion vehicles and fully electric models. GM had previously focused heavily on an all-electric future, but adapting to changing demand has become a priority.

Repurposed grant fuels Lansing Delta Township investment

A key part of GM’s revised manufacturing strategy is the restructuring of a $500 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The DOE initially awarded GM the $500 million Domestic Manufacturing Conversion Grant in July 2024 to support electrification work at the nearby Lansing Grand River Assembly plant.

The funding will now be redirected towards retooling the Lansing Delta Township facility for hybrid production. The change reflects an adjustment in government and industry priorities as the automotive sector transitions towards electrification. The DOE’s grant programme supports manufacturing conversions for hybrid, plug-in hybrid, battery-electric, and fuel-cell vehicles.

U.S. Assistant Secretary of Energy Audrey Robertson visited the Delta Township plant on 27 October 2026, signalling federal support for the revised strategy. The visit reflects support for hybrid manufacturing at established facilities, which could help preserve jobs and maintain industrial capacity during the automotive transition.

The investment is intended to help keep the U.S. automotive industry competitive. The timeline of the DOE’s decisions regarding GM’s $500 million grant should be clarified, particularly the relationship between its October 2025 statement and the restructuring agreement announced this week.

The development follows changes to U.S. electric-vehicle policy, including the suspension of some EV-related funding and the end of the $7,500 federal EV tax credit, effective 30 September 2025. In October 2025, the DOE also announced the cancellation of more than 300 financial awards for energy initiatives, which it projected would save $7.6 billion.

    Production capacity and vehicle plans

GM has not yet confirmed which models will receive hybrid powertrains at the Lansing Delta Township plant. However, the facility currently assembles three three-row SUVs: the Chevrolet Traverse, Buick Enclave, and GMC Acadia. Reuters has reported, citing sources familiar with the plans, that hybrid versions of these SUVs are expected.

The Lansing Delta Township plant is a major production facility for GM. In 2025, the plant produced more than 291,000 vehicles, its highest annual output in 20 years. The record followed strong demand for the SUVs assembled there.

The 2025 sales figures indicate strong demand for these models. Chevrolet Traverse sales rose 40.1% to 148,278 units, Buick Enclave sales increased 50.6% to 39,754 units, and GMC Acadia sales grew 12.3% to 55,221 units. Adding hybrid options could make these family SUVs more attractive to buyers seeking greater fuel efficiency.

GM has not disclosed specific launch dates, saying details about the models and their timing will be shared closer to their introduction. Industry analysts expect hybrid models to arrive in late 2027 or 2028, potentially coinciding with mid-cycle updates to the existing SUV line-ups.

GM expands investment in Michigan manufacturing

The planned hybrid production forms part of GM’s broader investment in its U.S. manufacturing operations. GM plans to invest more than $2 billion across its Lansing-area facilities over the next several years, including approximately $1 billion in new capital for the Delta Township plant.

The regional investment also includes a previously announced $1.25 billion for the Lansing Grand River Assembly plant. The funding is intended to prepare the Grand River facility for future vehicle production, including a next-generation gasoline-powered Cadillac CT5. Across its U.S. manufacturing operations, GM expects to invest approximately $9 billion in 2026.

GM has also allocated $7 billion for U.S.-based research and development in 2026. Mike Trevorrow, GM’s senior vice-president of global manufacturing, highlighted the importance of the local workforce. “Lansing’s strength starts with its people. Their skill and experience are why we continue to invest here,” Trevorrow said.

His comments reflect GM’s strategy of investing in existing facilities and its workforce to support more flexible production. This approach could allow GM to manufacture a wider range of vehicles while adapting to changes in consumer preferences and market demand.

    Implications for the automotive industry

GM’s shift towards hybrids reflects a reassessment of how quickly the market will transition to fully electric vehicles. The strategy could help GM compete with rivals such as Toyota and Ford, which offer hybrid models alongside electric vehicles.

The company already offers hybrid versions of its Corvette, specifically the Grand Sport X and ZR1X, in the U.S. market. However, extending hybrid powertrains to its high-volume family SUVs would represent a broader application of the technology across GM’s mainstream vehicle range. The transition would require retooling and adjustments across the supply chain.

Investing in an existing, high-performing plant like Lansing Delta Township underscores a pragmatic approach to industrial change. Rather than building entirely new facilities or closing existing ones, GM plans to adapt its current manufacturing operations. The approach draws on the experience of the existing workforce at a plant that produced more than 291,000 vehicles in 2025, its highest annual output.

The adjustment could help GM offer more fuel-efficient vehicles while responding to current consumer demand. Revenue from these models could also help fund GM’s longer-term investment in electric vehicles. Revenue from these models could also help fund GM’s longer-term investment in electric vehicles.
