Africa’s vehicle industry deepens as Morocco receives $1.8 million for another vehicle plant

Stellantis, the parent company for Peugeot, Jeep, and Fiat, has established its first vehicle dismantling and recycling center in the Middle East and Africa, strengthening Morocco’s position as the continent’s top vehicle manufacturing hub.

Located in Casablanca, the new plant has the capacity to deconstruct up to 10,000 end-of-life vehicles each year, recovering reusable components for resale throughout Morocco and West Africa.

The investment, which is worth $1.8 million, represents a significant step forward in Africa’s economic growth, from car production to the development of a whole automotive value chain that encompasses recycling, remanufacturing, and circular manufacturing.

As vehicle ownership grows across the continent, so does the difficulty of managing aged vehicles, increasing spare-part demand, and industrial waste.

Stellantis’ new business solves all three by establishing a localized system for recovering materials and parts that would otherwise be discarded or imported at a high cost.

Damaged and end-of-life cars will be sourced from insurance companies, auctions, and specialized recovery channels at the 6,000-square-meter location.

Following their recovery from the cars, functional parts will be offered for sale via Stellantis’s digital channels and aftersales network.

The investment also strengthens Morocco’s rising position in African manufacturing.

With big car facilities owned by Renault Group and Stellantis, the country recently surpassed South Africa as Africa’s largest vehicle producer, thanks to robust exports and aggressive economic policies.

In addition to typical replacement parts, it will recycle electric vehicle batteries, putting Africa in a prime position to become a significant EV recycling market as electric mobility spreads across the continent.

For decades, Africa’s automotive story has been mostly around importing and assembling vehicles.

This new chapter is different: it focuses on developing industrial solutions that serve the whole vehicle lifecycle.
