Kuwait has awarded MARSS Systems Limited a £370 million contract to supply advanced, AI-enabled air defence systems, a deal that means MARSS Systems secures 100 new UK jobs.

This latest acquisition by Kuwait follows persistent aerial threats throughout the Gulf region, particularly from Iranian missile and drone attacks. Kuwait’s critical need for robust protection for its infrastructure and military assets has propelled the acquisition of these advanced British systems.

How MARSS Systems Secures Kuwait’s Skies

The contract specifically tasks MARSS Systems with providing and integrating an advanced air defence solution designed to safeguard Kuwait against a range of airborne threats. These include sophisticated missiles and various types of drones, which have become increasingly prevalent in regional conflicts.

Production for this complex system will primarily occur at MARSS Systems’ facilities in Bristol. The deal also supports a notable expansion of the company’s UK offices, highlighting the tangible economic benefits of such defence export agreements for the domestic manufacturing sector.

Luke Pollard MP, Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, emphasised the dual impact of the deal. He stated, “By backing Kuwait with world-leading British technology, we’re not just strengthening a vital ally’s defences against real and growing threats. We’re creating skilled jobs here at home and proving that UK industry can deliver when it matters most.”

    MARSS NiDAR Platform: AI-Enabled Control

Central to Kuwait’s new defence capability is MARSS Systems’ NiDAR platform, an AI-enabled command and control centre. This sophisticated system integrates jammers, radars, and interceptors to effectively coordinate the detection and defeat of aerial threats.

The NiDAR platform functions as an AI-powered Internet of Things (IoT) solution, offering multi-domain situational awareness. It fuses data from diverse sensors, including radar, electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) cameras, and radio frequency detectors, into a single, cohesive interface.

This integration allows NiDAR to detect, track, classify, and respond to threats across air, land, surface, and sub-surface environments with remarkable speed. Johannes Pinl, CEO of MARSS, noted that “Countering drones and aerial threats is not about any single system, it is about an intelligent, layered architecture that detects, decides and defeats within seconds, and MARSS has built exactly that.”

NiDAR’s counter-unmanned aircraft system (CUAS) capabilities are particularly impressive, detecting objects over 25 kilometres away. It also seamlessly integrates with various countermeasures, from RF and GPS jamming to kinetic options, with engagement ranges extending up to 6 kilometres.

In May 2026, Electro Optic Systems Holdings Limited (EOS), an Australian defence and space technology company, acquired MARSS’s defence business. This acquisition has further enhanced MARSS’s ability to deliver integrated counter-drone solutions, combining NiDAR with EOS’s effector and sensor capabilities.

    Expanding UK Industrial Capacity

The creation of 100 new West Midlands manufacturing jobs in the UK directly results from this substantial defence contract. These roles are concentrated in engineering and manufacturing, supporting high-skill employment within the defence sector.

This investment in domestic production aligns with the UK Government’s Taskforce Sabre initiative. This programme actively brings together government and industry to ensure Gulf states can quickly secure essential defence systems and weaponry, especially in response to escalating regional tensions.

Such export agreements are vital for strengthening the UK’s industrial capabilities, providing consistent demand for specialized skills and advanced manufacturing processes. They contribute significantly to the broader economic landscape by fostering innovation and retaining high-value talent within the country.

The contract also supports the continued expansion of MARSS’s UK offices. This indicates a sustained commitment to British infrastructure and workforce development, reinforcing the UK’s position as a hub for advanced defence technology.

Kuwait’s Layered Defence Strategy and UK Precedent

This £370 million deal builds upon a history of defence cooperation between the UK and Kuwait, highlighting a long-term strategic partnership. The UK has previously supplied Kuwait with systems like Rapid Sentry, a ground-based air defence missile system, which achieved combat validation against Iranian drones in March 2026.

Furthermore, the Royal Air Force’s ORCUS system operates in Kuwait, assisting personnel in early drone detection and response to potential threats. ORCUS, an integrated counter-uncrewed aerial system (C-UAS), uses radar, RF detection sensors, and thermal imaging to identify and track hostile drones.

In a similar but separate development, a £370 million contract for the Common Anti-air Modular Missile (CAMM) system was announced on 2016-04-06. This deal, involving MBDA UK, was also projected to create 100 significant UK investment and manufacturing jobs, primarily at MBDA’s sites in Stevenage and Bolton. This historical precedent showcases the consistent nature of UK-Kuwait defence ties and the mutual benefits of such collaborations.

Kuwait’s existing air defence capabilities include PAC-2 & PAC-3 Patriot missiles and the Spada 2000 system, which fires Aspide 2000 missiles. Integrating MARSS’s NiDAR platform adds another critical layer to these existing systems, creating a more comprehensive and resilient defence architecture against evolving threats.

Outlook for Defence Exports and Job Creation

The latest MARSS Systems agreement serves to solidify the UK’s strategic position as a preferred defence partner for Kuwait and the broader Gulf region. It demonstrates how substantial international demand for advanced defence technology directly stimulates domestic manufacturing activity and employment.

The UK government maintains an ambitious target to significantly increase defence exports, aiming for £12 billion annually by 2020. This ongoing drive supports a specialized industrial base, vital for national security and economic prosperity. Securing these large-scale contracts is fundamental to achieving such objectives.

For UK engineering and manufacturing sectors, the deal ensures a pipeline of high-skill work, fostering expertise in areas like AI-enabled command and control systems and complex defence integration. This consistent demand helps in tackling skills gaps and encourages investment in future talent development.

The strategic importance of these deals extends beyond immediate economic gains. They reinforce geopolitical alliances and contribute to regional stability by enhancing the defensive capabilities of key partners. This integrated approach benefits both the UK’s industrial base and its foreign policy objectives.
