In an attempt to evade tariffs on China, Apple Inc. boosted iPhone production in India by roughly 53% last year and currently produces 25% of its flagship devices there.

According to people familiar with the situation who asked not to be named because the figures aren’t public, the company assembled over 55 million iPhones in India in 2025, up from 36 million a year earlier.

Globally, Apple produces between 220 and 230 million iPhones annually, with India’s part of the total growing quickly.

Apple has been stepping up its operations in India lately, thanks to production-linked incentives that the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi rolled out to turn the country into a major global manufacturing hub.

These government subsidies have been a big help, offsetting some key cost problems for Indian manufacturers, especially the less established supply chain compared to China’s, and those persistent logistics issues.

Due to US tariffs associated with the trade war between the two economic giants, shipments from China, where Apple still produces the majority of iPhones, had difficulties in 2025, Bloomberg reported.

However, India still has higher costs for electronics assembly and component production than nations like China and Vietnam, despite the fact that the difference has shrunk.

Apple, Samsung Electronics Co., and others have sought additional government assistance as a result.

All iterations of the most recent iPhone 17 series, including the premium Pro and Pro Max models, are currently assembled in India by Cupertino, California-based Apple.

Older models like the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 are also produced by its Indian vendors, Foxconn Technology Group, Tata Electronics, and Pegatron Corp., for both domestic and international markets.

Apple’s long-term supply chain strategy to establish a second significant iPhone manufacturing base to meet global demand is highlighted by the growing output in India.

In order to produce parts like lithium-ion cells, watch and phone shells, and accessories like AirPods, the business is strengthening and expanding its local supplier relationships.
