April 20, 2026; A massive day for the tech world. Apple has officially announced that Tim Cook will step down as CEO on September 1, 2026. Cook is not retiring out of the company, but after 15 years of being the head, he will shift to being the Executive Chairman of the Apple board.
John Ternus, the Apple Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering has been elected by a unanimous vote of the board as the new CEO
The history of the Cook Era: A Scale Legacy.
Tim Cook replaced Steve Jobs in 2011 when there was a lot of skepticism. He did not only keep the company in existence, he industrialized it. It was during his tenure that Apple expanded its worth to be worth billions of dollars to a colossal 4 trillion company.
Cook was the operational genius and Jobs was the visionary. He has steered Apple out of the hardware business and created a services business that is currently bringing in more than $100 billion every year. He also managed to steer the company through the global pandemic and introduced Apple Watch and AirPods which now dominate their respective markets.
Introducing the new CEO: John Ternus.
You have almost certainly seen John Ternus in the past couple of years, at an Apple Keynote. A 25-year veteran of the company, Ternus has been the face of Apple’s hardware engineering since 2021.
He is frequently attributed with the management of the conversion of Mac to Apple Silicon, and engineering the iPhone and iPad. Cook said he had the mind of an engineer, the soul of an innovator and the heart to lead with integrity. The appointment of Ternus indicates that Apple will continue to have its hardware and silicon activities highly coordinated.

The Executive Shuffle
Another expansion that is part of the succession plan is that of Johny Srouji, the genius behind the proprietary chips of Apple. Srouji will now be in charge of the Hardware Engineering department besides his present position in Hardware Technologies.
This unification puts the whole brain of Apple devices under a single leader, essential with the company taking more steps towards Apple Intelligence and spatial computing.
This change is very stable as compared to the handover of 2011. Cook will remain as the Executive Chairman to deal with high-level policy engagement and international relations, giving Ternus the opportunity to concentrate on product and vision.
The action is well-timed as Apple enters the “AI arms race” and tries to turn the Vision Pro into a mainstream product. To both investors and fans the answer is whether Ternus could offer the much needed visionary touch that many people believed was lacking under the operations-centric Cook regime.
Intensive Reflection: Institutionalization of Apple.
It is not merely a shift of personnel in this scenario, but the fulfillment of the transformation of Apple as a founder-led miracle company to a process-based global organization.
The best thing that Cook did was probably to build a company, which is so strong that it can withstand the loss of one of the most recognizable leaders. The board is reinforcing the continuity over disruption by encouraging Ternus, who has dedicated his whole career to the Apple ecosystem.
