Smart Manufacturing Week 2026 concluded its fifth edition at the NEC Birmingham on 4 June, recording 13,405 visitors to the show floor. Managed by The Manufacturer, part of Nineteen Group, the event provided a platform for 437 world-class exhibitors to showcase industrial automation and digital transformation tools.
Managing Director at Hennik Research Grace Gilling confirmed that 871 meetings were booked through the event app, marking the highest level of engagement in the show’s history.
The event served as a critical nexus for the UK’s industrial sector, aligning closely with recent policy developments such as the Advanced Manufacturing AI Adoption Plan. National AI Champion for Advanced Manufacturing Chris Dungey chaired a headline panel exploring how artificial intelligence has moved from a conceptual ambition to a boardroom priority.
This discussion followed the plan’s unveiling on 8 June, which focuses on safe industrial AI deployment to increase productivity and reduce energy waste.
Engineering professionals at the event focused heavily on digital twins and sustainable production ecosystems as primary tools for achieving Net Zero targets. High attendance and commercial depth suggest that despite supply chain instability, UK industrial firms are prioritising technology to maintain agility. Many of these firms are already observing how collaborative automation goes mainstream as a standard for modern plant engineering.
Integration of agentic AI and industrial simulation
A central feature of the 2026 programme was the debut of agentic AI within the factory environment. Alibaba.com, the Official Agentic Business Partner, demonstrated its Accio Work platform through a bespoke “Event Edition Agent” created specifically for the show floor. This technology assists engineers in operational decision-making, moving beyond static dashboards to active agents that support efficiency and productivity.
In the Product Innovation & Design Theatre, Gareth Knopp, Innovation and Simulation Manager at Bucher Municipal, detailed the practical application of advanced simulation. Bucher Municipal, winners of The Manufacturer MX Awards for Product Innovation and Design in 2025, uses simulation and AI to redefine equipment development.
This approach reduces R&D barriers, a strategy increasingly seen as manufacturers pivot to Manufacturing Execution Systems for better plant-floor visibility.
Fostering talent through the STEM Showcase
The future of the sector was on display at the dedicated STEM Showcase, where apprentices from Rolls-Royce, Festo, and Balmoral Tanks shared their early-career experiences. Organisations such as The Engineering Trust, Stemettes, and The Smallpeice Trust engaged with student visitors to spark passion for engineering careers. This workforce focus addressed a primary pillar of the event: closing the skills gap through practical education.
Confirmed exhibitors and technical demonstrations
The exhibition floor in Hall 5 featured hardware ranging from large-scale robotics to edge AI vision systems. Key organisations confirmed for the 2026 programme included Beckhoff, FANUC, Schneider Electric, Solutions PT, and DMSI. Technical demonstrations allowed visitors to see these tools in a live industrial context:
- Ensemble AI: Demonstrated live AI-powered identification of industrial spare parts.
- ByteSnap Design: Showcased real-time edge AI vision systems for quality control.
- TWI: Combined collaborative robotics with ultrasonic inspection software to detect component defects.
- Creat3D: Operated industrial 3D printers live on the stand to show rapid prototyping.
Beyond the stands, the event hosted the Accu FightFest robot fighting competition within the Drives & Controls Expo. This feature, along with the Factory of the Future walk-through demonstrator, provided hands-on experience with high-performance engineering. Attendees also had access to co-located events including Maintec, Design & Engineering Expo, and the Manufacturing Digitalisation Summit.
Turning industrial data into decarbonisation
The Manufacturing Digitalisation Summit, now in its sixth year, drew 232 high-level attendees to champion the delivery of digital technology. Discussions highlighted findings from the 2026 Manufacturing Momentum Report, which placed AI at the top of the industrial agenda alongside workforce culture and sustainability.
Practical execution remained a recurring theme at the Connected Production stage, where Fine Lady Bakeries Site Director Kayode Adisa led talks on automation data flow.
On 4 June, Power Platform Lead at Columbus Jack Binnall led a session titled “Turning Data into Decarbonisation: the Digital Factory Story.” This session, which featured participation from Michelmersh, focused on converting raw data into actionable strategies for meeting sustainability goals. This focus on industrial connectivity mirrors global trends where the African IoT sector is expanding to solve infrastructure challenges through similar data-led frameworks.
Strategic collaboration also occurred through the SMMT Meet the Buyer Programme, which forged connections within the automotive supply chain. By bringing together the people and technologies shaping the sector, Smart Manufacturing Week 2026 provided a roadmap for UK manufacturing to navigate the transition toward a digital and net-zero future.
