    Personal energy production is gaining serious momentum across the United States, with DIY plug-in solar leading the charge as a newly accessible option for homeowners.

    This surge is fuelled by a wave of new state-level legislation designed to dismantle the regulatory hurdles that have historically stifled their adoption. With US electricity prices climbing nearly 40% since 2021, the appeal of a user-installed system that can offset a portion of that cost is undeniable.

    A legislative wave unlocks a new DIY plug-in solar market

    The technology promises to democratise solar power, extending its benefits beyond traditional homeowners to the 57 million households, including apartment dwellers, who cannot install permanent rooftop arrays.

    The pivotal moment for DIY plug-in solar in the US arrived in March 2025 with the passage of Utah’s House Bill 340. This landmark legislation created a new, simplified legal category for portable solar devices up to 1,200 watts. It effectively exempted them from the complex interconnection agreements, permits, and utility pre-approvals typically required for larger installations.

    Utah’s bold move created a blueprint that other states have rushed to follow. In 2026 alone, a cascade of similar laws were passed in Virginia, Maine, Colorado, Maryland, New Jersey, Connecticut, Vermont, and New Hampshire. Bills are also awaiting signatures from governors in California and New York, two of the nation’s largest markets.

    In total, at least 24 states have either passed or introduced legislation to streamline plug-in solar deployment.

    This regulatory shift is critical. It transforms a solar system from a major capital improvement project, often requiring contractors and engineers, into a consumer appliance. By removing what advocates call billions in unnecessary red tape, states are unlocking a significant new source of clean energy and providing consumers with a powerful tool to manage their household expenses.

    How plug-and-play power generation works

    The technology behind DIY plug-in solar is straightforward. A typical kit consists of one or more solar panels, a microinverter, and the necessary cables to connect to an outdoor-rated GFCI outlet. Unlike traditional string inverters that manage an entire rooftop array, microinverters are usually attached to the back of each individual panel.

    This allows for better performance in partial shade and simpler diagnostics. The development of these low-power chips has been fundamental to making these systems both efficient and affordable.

    During daylight hours, the solar panels generate direct current (DC) electricity. The microinverter instantly converts this into alternating current (AC) that matches the voltage and frequency of a home’s electrical system. When plugged in, the system feeds this power into the home’s circuits.

    Appliances and electronics on that circuit will automatically draw power from the solar system first, only pulling from the utility grid when the solar supply is insufficient.

    Safety is a primary concern, and modern systems are built to rigorous standards. Microinverters must carry UL certification and include a rapid shutdown feature that de-energises the system within seconds if the grid goes down. This prevents the system from sending power back into deactivated utility lines, protecting line workers during an outage.

    The new UL 3700 certification, expected by late 2026, will further standardise safety for these devices.

    Calculating the cost and return on investment

    The financial proposition of plug-in solar is compelling, offering a significantly lower entry cost compared to traditional rooftop installations. DIY kits range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. For example, an 800-watt system—a popular size for offsetting a significant portion of a home’s base load—costs about $1,200 on average in the US.

    Companies entering the market are competing aggressively on price. Craftstrom offers systems at approximately $1.60 per watt, while EcoFlow’s PowerStream system is priced at $1.58 per watt. For those on a tighter budget, Bright Saver offers smaller 180W kits for just over $285.

    This price competition is expected to intensify, with forecasts predicting costs could fall from nearly $3.00 per watt today to under $0.60 per watt within a few years as the market scales.

    The return on this investment comes from direct savings on electricity bills. An 800W system can reduce a household’s annual electricity consumption by 10% to 30%, saving roughly $175 per year in a region like the US Southeast. The average payback period for a system bought today is about five to six years.

    However, in states with high electricity costs, that payback period can shrink to as little as two years, making it a very attractive financial decision.

    Market potential and the road ahead

    The potential scale of the plug-in solar market in the United States is enormous. One study estimates a total addressable market of over 57 million households, which could translate to 57 gigawatts (GW) of new, distributed energy production. If fully realised, this could save American consumers an estimated $13 billion annually.

    This growth aligns with broader trends in US manufacturing and technology, creating new opportunities for domestic production and innovation.

    Major players like EcoFlow, Craftstrom, and Bright Saver are leading the charge, building on the work of earlier pioneers like PluggedSolar. Yet the rollout is not without its complexities. EcoFlow’s PowerStream, for instance, launched exclusively in Utah to align with its favourable laws, with wider expansion planned throughout 2026.

    Some companies cannot yet ship to states like New York or Maine, which require whole-system certifications that are still pending.

    While it won’t replace large utility-scale projects or comprehensive rooftop arrays, plug-in solar serves a vital and underserved segment of the market. It represents a significant step towards energy resilience and affordability, putting the power to generate electricity directly into the hands of millions of consumers for the first time.

    As more states adopt enabling legislation and technology costs continue to fall, the sight of solar panels on balconies and in backyards is set to become an increasingly common feature of the American energy landscape.
