    The UK Ministry of Defence has awarded BAE Systems a new £135 million contract to maintain and repair the Royal Navy’s Spearfish and Sting Ray torpedoes. This three-year agreement, known as the Torpedo Repair and Maintenance (TRAM) programme, runs from July 2026 to June 2029 and will secure 315 skilled jobs across the United Kingdom.

    The investment reinforces Britain’s undersea defence capabilities while bolstering a critical part of its advanced engineering supply chain. Officials say the investment is a direct use of defence spending designed to foster economic growth and create high-skilled employment nationwide.

    Sustaining critical undersea defence capabilities

    This substantial contract ensures the Royal Navy’s torpedo inventory remains available and operationally ready. It underpins the nation’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities and wider maritime defence. Rear Admiral Matt Stratton, Royal Navy Director Naval Acquisition, emphasised that the extension guarantees a “safe, reliable and continuous torpedo support capability”.

    The TRAM contract covers two primary weapon systems: the Spearfish heavyweight torpedo and the Sting Ray Mod 1 lightweight torpedo. Both are vital components of the UK’s naval power projection and protective measures against evolving maritime threats.

    Spearfish and Sting Ray: key naval armaments

    The Spearfish Heavyweight Torpedo serves as the Royal Navy’s main submarine-launched weapon. It is designed to engage both surface ships and other submarines with high precision. Its role is crucial for offensive and defensive operations in complex underwater environments.

    Conversely, the Sting Ray Mod 1 is primarily an anti-submarine warfare torpedo. It offers versatility and can be deployed from frigates, naval helicopters, and maritime patrol aircraft. Maintaining these systems’ operational integrity throughout their service lives demands highly specialised engineering, repair, testing, and support expertise.

    Boosting UK engineering and manufacturing jobs

    Beyond its defence implications, the TRAM contract provides a significant boost to the UK’s industrial base. It directly supports 315 jobs, with 150 highly skilled engineering and technician roles based within BAE Systems itself.

    The remaining 165 positions are sustained across the company’s extensive UK supply chain. This demonstrates the contract’s wide-reaching impact on various supporting industries.

    Portsmouth is set to benefit significantly, with 100 jobs specifically allocated there. Another 50 roles will be distributed across BAE Systems’ sites in Edinburgh, Chelmsford, and the wider Glasgow area. This geographical spread ensures that the economic benefit reaches multiple regions.

    Luke Pollard MP, Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, highlighted the dual benefit. He stated, “This is defence spending doing exactly what it should – keeping our country safe while securing 315 skilled jobs and creating new opportunities across our country.”

    The government clearly intends to use defence expenditure to stimulate domestic manufacturing and engineering capabilities. This also safeguards vital skills nationwide.

    Importance of defence supply chain resilience

    The investment reflects a broader strategic imperative for the UK to enhance the resilience of its defence supply chains. Maintaining critical engineering expertise domestically is paramount, especially for highly specialised areas like torpedo systems.

    Long-term support contracts, such as this £135 million Royal Navy torpedo contract, provide manufacturers with predictable, long-term demand.

    They also play a crucial role in sustaining capabilities that, once lost, are difficult and expensive to rebuild. For companies like BAE Systems, this multi-year commitment ensures a stable workload for their specialist engineering teams.

    It also bolsters the wider industrial ecosystem involved in maintaining advanced naval weapons. Such sustained investment is vital for national security and economic stability.

    Strategic context: the Defence Investment Plan

    This contract isn’t an isolated procurement; it forms a part of the UK’s ambitious £298 billion Defence Investment Plan. This four-year strategy aims to strengthen military capabilities across all domains while actively promoting economic growth and high-skilled employment.

    It’s a holistic approach, linking national security directly to industrial prosperity. Such plans recognise the symbiotic relationship between defence and economic strength.

    The emphasis on domestic investment reflects a growing global trend towards strengthening sovereign industrial capabilities, particularly in critical sectors. Governments are recognising the strategic value of an indigenous manufacturing and engineering base, not just for economic reasons but for national security.

    Bridging to future torpedo support: WHITEHEAD2

    The TRAM contract also serves a forward-looking purpose, acting as a crucial bridge to the longer-term WHITEHEAD2 programme. Scheduled to commence in 2029, WHITEHEAD2 aims to introduce a modernised torpedo support solution.

    This ensures the Royal Navy’s undersea warfare capabilities continue to evolve in response to changing maritime threats. The programme represents a continuous commitment to naval superiority. Engineers constantly work to reshape power systems and other critical infrastructure.

    BAE Systems’ role in continuous operational readiness

    BAE Systems is responsible for supporting the Royal Navy’s torpedo capabilities. This role includes managing the introduction of the latest Spearfish variant and ensuring the continuous availability of Sting Ray torpedoes.

    This consistent performance and reliability have proven instrumental in securing this new contract. Such long-term partnerships are key to defence readiness.

    Scott Jamieson, Managing Director of BAE Systems’ Maritime and Land Defence Solutions, affirmed the company’s commitment to defence readiness. His statements underscored BAE Systems’ foundational role in the nation’s Continuous at Sea Deterrent and anti-submarine warfare capabilities.
